The flowering plant Astragalus belongs to the family of legumes and is a native to China. Only a handful of the 2000 species have been used in traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years. Astragalus is derived from the root of a plant (Astragalus membranaceus) in the pea family. It is also known as milk vetch root and Huang qi.
